Overview

Bike & Barge: North Holland & Friesland

8 days | MS Serena | Self-guided cycle tours

Flat countryside all the way to the horizon, windmills, canals (Grachten) and cycling, that's the Netherlands all over! And there's so much more besides. Discover the Netherlands in a unique way on an 8 day journey by bike and boat. Well-built cycle paths together with extensive waterways make for one unforgettable holiday. Throughout the day enjoy cycling on your own through the beautiful landscapes of Rembrandt- and Van Gogh-country and then in the late afternoon your floating hotel MS SERENA will be there to welcome you. And if you don't fancy cycling every day, you can always stay on board and enjoy the passing countryside as the barge goes on its way.

The Dutch province of the North Netherlands is situated on a peninsula between the North Sea and the great inland lake, the IJsselmeer, (formerly the 'Zuiderzee'). The Northern Netherlands were founded on the separation of the north and south of the Netherlands in 1840. The province's capital is Haarlem and Amsterdam is its biggest city. Discover the area's folklore and traditions as you explore its flat Polderlands, North Sea coast and romantic ports. Along the way you'll be travelling through a region which was formerly lake and marshland and that has been drained with the help of windmills since the 17th century. Experience a wonderful array of typically Dutch polder-countryside, dunes and North Sea beaches as well as the beautiful North Sea island of Texel and many picturesque harbour villages on the coast of the IJsselmeer.
