Bike & Barge: From Bruges to Brussels - Cycle Brilliant Belgium
8 days | MS Magnifique | Guided or self-guided cycle tour
Historic, unique and truly inspirational – Flanders’ amazing ‘art cities’ come in all shapes and sizes but now you can visit them all in one treasure-filled tour at a wonderfully gently pace. Stay in style on Belgium’s waterways with comfortable Dutch barge classic, Magnifique, as your floating hotel and take to two wheels to get a closer look at timeless Bruges, undiscovered Ghent, the diamond city of Antwerp as well as Mechelen’s beautifully historic heart and the great Belgian capital, Brussels.
Cycle out on guided or self-guided day rides to explore Bruges in all its medieval glory and take a gentle spin through green polder landscapes to the golden dunes of the coast, before cruising away to Moerebrugge and pedalling off along the Ghent-Oostende canal into Flanders’ famous university city. Second only in size to Paris in the Middle Ages, Ghent today is a still very much a beautiful treasure, but further along the River Schelde, historic Dendemonde and diamond trading city, Antwerp are calling. Pay homage here to the great Flemish painter, Rubens, and wonder at his work in the Cathedral of Our Lady, the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries. En route to Lier, the city’s suburbs make for some pretty scenic cycling with their smart villas and neat little gardens, then there’s another (River) ‘Nete’ cycleway as you head towards the Willebroek Canal. With its compact, historic centre and fascinating museums like ‘The Mad Art Collection’, Mecheln is a real must-see, before the gilded buildings, artistic offerings or cheeky little ‘Mannekin Pis’ in the beautiful centre of Brussels finally win your heart.
This linear tour route is available in both directions, starting either in Bruges or Brussels in Belgium. Return travel to your start point is possible by train, but this is not included in the tour price.
Nice & Easy - Gentle touring by bike along flat cycle tracks, former canal- and river-side tow paths, minor roads and village lanes lined with poplars. Some small and short ascents only in areas where there are drainage dykes and bridges. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
