Bike & Sail: Lake IJssel Shore to Shore
8 Days | Elizabeth | Self-guided cycle tour
Coast along the shores of the Ijsselmeer on two wheels and sail across its waters to Friesland in classic style, beneath the white billowing sails of a century-old clipper. It’s a wonderful Dutch combo, starting out from Holland’s cosmopolitan capital, pedalling past the delightful wooden houses of the Waterland with a quick nose at Edam en-route, then on to gloriously historic towns like Hoorn and Enkhuizen - those rich reminders of the Dutch Golden Age when precious cargos of spices were unloaded on the quaysides of the old Zuiderzee. Across the great lake, green and pleasant Gaasterland awaits, with its undulating landscape and little lost islands. Friesland’s oldest town, Stavoren, has a folktale to tell, before you finally return to Amsterdam, full of stories of your own from Ijsselmeer adventure.
Fancy lending a hand on deck? Your hosts for this week-long tour, the experienced crew of Clipper Elizabeth, welcome novices and experienced sailors alike to take an active part in sailing the ship. The daily cycling programmes are designed to be flexible, so if you prefer to relax on board and enjoy a day’s sailing, that is an option.
Nice & Easy - Gentle touring by bike along flat cycle tracks and minor roads. Some small and short ascents only in areas where there are drainage dykes and bridges. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
