Bike & Sail: North Sea Islands Voyage of Discovery
8 Days | Mare fan Fryslân & Wapen fan Fryslân | Self-guided cycle tour
Treat the explorer in you to a truly Dutch voyage of discovery, riding the waves of the Wadden See in style on board one of the most luxurious tall sailing ships to grace these waters today. And when you reach the hauntingly natural, unspoilt worlds of the North Sea Islands, there’s riding of a different kind to enjoy too, for this string of island pearls is one great paradise for cyclists. Cycle or sail out along the Ijsselmeer coast from that historic town of the Dutch Golden Age, Enkhuizen, to the fishing harbour of Den Oever by the Wadden See. From here the island adventure begins: first with Texel for a taste of wonderfully scenic cycling and a well-deserved beer at Oudeschild brewery; then Teschelling where seals bask on the sandbanks and birds of a feather stick together in impressive large colonies. You’ll need your binoculars on Vlieland too, a refreshingly car-free island with awesome views from the sandy heights of the ‘Vuurboetsduin’ and some out of this world cycling adventures.
Whether you’re a hardened old seadog or never been on the water before, one discovery you may make during your voyage is the thrill of getting hands-on and helping to sail the tall ship itself. Your hosts for this week-long tour, the experienced crew of the Mare fan Fryslân or Wapen fan Fryslân, will show you how.
Nice & Easy - Gentle touring by bike along flat cycle tracks and minor roads. Some small and short ascents only in areas where there are drainage dykes and bridges. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
