Frisian Eleven-Cities-Cycling-Tour

Rent a motor-cruiser & bike holiday:  The Eleven Cities Tour – Tradition with a twist

Here’s a jolly Dutch thing. The opportunity to enjoy your very own ‘Elfstedentocht’ or Eleven Cities Tour. It’s a unique Frisian tradition - only now you can enjoy it by motor cruiser and bike rather than getting your skates on…

Well, they don’t call it ‘Freeze’-land for nothing. Held in deepest winter in the Dutch province of Friesland, the ‘Alvestêdetocht’ (that’s official Frisian for the Eleven Cities Tour) is actually a skating competition that follows a circular route from Leeuwarden along frozen canals and little lakes taking in ten other Frisian towns and cities on the way.

The eleven cities included in the 200 kms / 124 mile loop are the traditional eleven Frisian cities which boast historic charters. Each one is well worth a visit and with simply superb boating and cycling routes between them, the tour makes for a really unique Dutch holiday with a traditional twist.

About the self-drive motor-cruiser & bike tour

The Tour

Choose from 7 and 14 day tours by self-drive motor cruiser and bike. Travel along rivers and canals and across lakes, both great and small, or pedal off down countryside paths and alongside drainage dykes en route to the eleven Frisian cities. Leeuwarden, Friesland’s capital, is large and full of life place and Sneek and Harlingen are vibrant hubs too. You’ll find others are smaller and sweet, but for the most part, all the towns and cities have somehow held on to their authentic rural character.

There are two specific routes to choose from and a third option, to enjoy a longer stay in Leeuwarden, European Capital of Culture 2018. All routes start and finish from Sneek in Friesland.

More information

The Boats

Our small, select fleet of good-looking and well-maintained motor-cruisers (houseboats) is based in the marina at Sneek. Boats sleep between 2 and 12 people (depending on the boat) and each one is completely equipped for its maximum number of guests. In the Netherlands, boating licenses are NOT required for motor-cruisers up to 15 m in length. Instruction will be given at the time of handover, to ensure that you feel safe navigating the vessel before you set off on the waterways.

The Bikes

Our 3-7 gear touring bicycles come with both a baggage rack and pannier bag. They simply be brought on board for you, then off you go! Every day, there’ll be a chance to cover an interesting stretch by boat and also have time for a good bike ride.
