Frequently asked questions: Boating in Friesland
Do I need a boating licence?A driving licence is not required for our motor cruisers. Before you start your tour, you will receive detailed instruction until you can safely navigate the vessel. You will be taught how to get on and off safely and also learn about the technology on board. The motor cruisers are easy to handle, even without experience. However, if you wish to hire a 15 metre yacht, previous experience in dealing with motor boats is desirable.
What are the payment terms?A deposit of 50% of the charter price is due within the three weeks after booking. Final payment is required four weeks before departure.
Is there a discount if I book for more than one week?
Holland-by-Bike is pleased to offer a discount of 10% discount off the charter price for bookings of 2 or 3 weeks.
What time can I check in?Your boat will be ready for pick-up from 1 pm on your day of arrival. If you are going to arrive later than 5 pm, please contact the reception. You will receive the phone number in your travel documents. The boat must be returned on the last day byl 9 am.
What's the difference between the 'Elite', 'Standard' and 'Budget' classes of boat?Elite class boats have both a bow and stern thruster and are our most luxurious self-drive cruisers. They are equipped with comfortable chairs with cushions and an outdoor table. They have a LCD TV with DVD and DVB, bedding and bed linen. In the bathroom you will find towels, soap and shampoo. There's a little welcome gesture too when you get to take over the controlsStandard class boats are also equipped with bedding, bed linen and towels.
Budget class boats: Please bring your own sleeping bags or bed linen as well as towels or rent them in advance. Bed linen and towel rental: € 12.50 per person; Towel package (1 large and 2 small towels): € 5.00 per package .
How many people will my motor cruiser sleep comfortably?
In our boat descriptions, we give an upper and lower figure (if applicable) for the number of people who can be accommodated on each craft eg. Sleeps 2-4.
Within the tour specification, we specifically state the number of berths and the number of cabins eg Sleeps 4+2 in 2 cabins. The 'plus' figure indicates that in addition to the cabin berths, extra berths are possible in the living area. Whereas we acknowledge these additional berths, we do not really recommend them as they are small and less comfortable.
Compact living is all part of the boating experience, but we want you to enjoy your boating holiday with us and we think that you will be the best judge of what you will consider to be adequate and comfortable sleeping arrangements for your party.
What routes can I sail with my motor cruiser? On board of your motor cruiser you will find maps of the waterways of Friesland which you can use for the duration of your stay. We are able to supply some sample routes by e-mail, so that you can get a feel for the sort of distances which you can expect to sail over the course of a week.
Will my boat fit under all the bridges in Friesland? There is no need to worry whether your selected motor cruiser is too high to pass along the sample routes provided- the routes are designed for all the different sorts of cruisers based at Sneek and described here. Most bridges are drawbridges, so they can be raised and are manned during the day, although there may be a break in service during the afternoon break for about an hour. The exact operating times of all the bridges in the area, as well as information on the marinas can be found in the current 'Wateralmanak' (waterways almanac) on board, a special guide for cruising in Holland. In this almanac, you will also find all other important information about the harbour locations and waterways of Holland: moorings, prices for overnight stays in the marinas, port facilities and telephone numbers of the portmasters etc.
Do I have to clean the boat before hand back?As part of our special service, final cleaning of cruisers from Sneek is free of charge for our charter guests. All we would ask is that you help us by leaving the boat in a generally clean and tidy state. Please do the washing up, put away the dishes and leave your boat well swept. The on-site service team will do the rest.
What extra expenses do I have to allow for?Bridge fees and lock charges, as well as fuel costs, are not included in the rental price. When you go under a bridge or through a lock, there is a charge of about € 1.- . For the most part this is collected in a wooden shoe which the master of the bridge / lock keeper will pass down to you - a nice tradition. Many bridges do not charge a fee.
Habour charges are between € 1.- and € 3.- per metre of boat length. Water, electricity and the use of the sanitary facilities are often included in these fees. The price structure for the different ports can be found in the 'Wateralmanak' (almanac) on board.
Fuel: The fuel consumption is approx 5 litres per hour, depending on the driving style and size of the cruiser. The boats are handed over with full tank of diesel and a full water tank. When you return the boat, these will be fully refilled and you will be charged for the amount of fuel required. Fuel is to be paid for directly on the spot.
Do I always have to moor at a marina or harbour?
There are many small harbour towns in Friesland where you can dock your boat for just one or many nights. Alternatively, you can look for a mooring spontaneously, right in the middle of the countryside. The 'De Marrekrite' organisation looks after berths outside regular harbours and now provides around 3,500 free mooring sites at over 285 locations (most of which are in the beautiful Frisian Lake District), suitable for those sailing yacht skippers and motor boaters in search of a spot of real natural tranquility. The Marrekrite berths are free of charge if you carry a Marrekrite flag on your boat. Our motor cruisers already have this flag on board. Stays in Marrekrite berths are limited to a maximum of 3 days at the same location.
