Cycle & Stay: Capital Encounters - From London to Amsterdam
8 days I Hotel to Hotel I Self-guided cycle tour
Holland’s canal city capital has a real reputation for being brilliantly bike friendly, so why not arrive there in true Dutch style by setting out from Britain for a satisfying ride from London to Amsterdam, exploring some of Northern Europe’s best bits along the way? From the saddle of a bike, you’re sure to find the little medieval streets of Canterbury or Bruges just that bit more enticing or Belgium’s sandy coastline more wonderfully breath-taking - and there’s no doubt that Holland’s windmill-dotted waterways will put you in a real spin! On a bike, the scenery and sights are so much more immediate, somehow so much more real and accessible.
Start at the English home of time by the Greenwich Royal Observatory to pedal down the Thames into the county of Kent, ‘The Garden of England’. Cathedral city, Canterbury, is a magnificent must-see, before rolling uplands lead to the iconic white cliffs of Dover for the ferry crossing to France. Don’t miss Dunkirk’s impressive bell towers near the haunting battlefields of centuries past en route to those Bruges belfries beyond Belgium’s sandy North Sea beaches and classic seaside resorts. Holland’s province of Zeeland is a voyage of discovery all of its own with its islands, bridges and ferries. Then there’s Rembrandt’s historic ‘River City’, Dordrecht, and the ‘Oude Gracht’ wharves of cathedral city, Utrecht. From the chalk uplands of England and the sandy shorelines of France and Belgium, to Holland’s low-lying ‘Waterland’ pastures, this tour is brimful of relaxed scenic cycling as well as bursting with the energy of those great capital cities, London and Amsterdam. The best of both worlds? Definitely.
This linear tour includes the ferry crossing Dunkirk to Dover. Some parts of the route are covered by train (rail fares not included). Please see tour itinerary for full details.
Return travel to your start point is possible by plane or by train and ferry, but this is not included in the tour price.
Intermediate: Cycle tours in terrain varying from flat to hilly. More suitable for people who cycle regularly (or for people who cycle only occasionally and don’t mind getting off to push up a hill!).
Please note: We advise that basic cycling experience is required for this particular tour. Although the terrain is mainly flat and mainly on tarmacked surfaces (only 20% unmade country roads), the ride between Canterbury and Dover in England (34 kms) is hilly. Cycling distances are around 44 to 80 km per day / 4 to 6 hours on the bike saddle. Suitable for children aged 12 + years.
