Cycle & Stay: Discovery Tour - Bruges to Amsterdam
8 days I Hotel to Hotel I Self-guided cycle tour
Pedal ‘up’ from Belgium’s Bruges - the ‘Venice of the North’ - to Amsterdam’s famous historic canal ring in the Netherlands and it’s sure to be the delightful waterway vistas and ‘oude’ town discoveries which take your breath away, not the gentle nature of the cycling. Admittedly, you may encounter the occasional incline, but your route through Flanders and Holland is wonderfully easy-going on top quality cycle paths, and there’s so much local food for thought (and cycling) along the way too.
In Bruges, you’ll find tempting treats down almost every medieval alleyway - irresistible Belgian chocolates and even a museum dedicated to that Belgian speciality - chips (‘Friets’)! Heading north, Napoleon’s ‘Daamse Vart’ canal is unexpectedly romantic as the beauty of Zeelandic Flanders unfurls along water-meadow and close-to-the-coast landscapes towards Middleburg, that important trading centre of the Dutch Golden Age. Veere or historic Zieriksee are places to drink in picture-postcard views along with a coffee on some café terrace (accompanied by a ‘Zeeuwse bolussen’ pastry of course!). Whilst Willemstad, the star-shaped fortified town, is sure to be a highlight too.
Dunes, islands, ferries, bridges – there’s such a variety along the way and that’s even before you discover history-rich Dordrecht with its beautiful Biesbosch National Park, Kinderdijk’s iconic windmills or get a taste for Gouda as you cycle through Holland’s ‘Green Heart’, to arrive in real Dutch style by the famous gabled façades of Amsterdam.
This linear tour route is available in both directions, starting either Bruges in Belgium or Amsterdam, Holland. Return travel to your start point is possible by train, but this is not included in the tour price.
Easy to Moderate: Gentle cycling tours in mainly flat terrain with some gentle hills, but no long or steep ascents. Individual stages of the cycle ride are generally short with some longer stages. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
