Cycle & Stay: Dunes & Canals
8 days I Hotel to Hotel I Self-guided cycle tour
If variety is the spice of life, then this has to be a truly tasty bike tour! Packed full of coast and countryside, waterways and lakeland landscapes, enjoy one excellent helping of scenic cycling, deliciously seasoned with time in historic cities, where 17th century traders unloaded their precious cargos of spices during the rich days of the Dutch Golden Age.
Look forward to green meadows, polders and woodlands or back along Amsterdam’s famous canals. Look out over wide sandy Zandvoort beaches and tufty dunes towards the North Sea, and across the ‘new’ IJsselmeer lake - once the ‘inner sea‘ (Zuiderzee) - at Enkuizen as you pedal the impressive great dijke all the way to Lelystad. Find out about the history of these fascinating polderlands at the Noord Holland’s Zuiderzee Museum or at Flevoland’s Museum Nieuwland, and get a feel for the industry of days gone by at the old Hansa port of Harderwijk or the Spakenburg’s historic shipyards filled with old fishing ‘botters’.
Of course, no tasty Dutch tour is complete without a big cheese or a windmill or two, so don’t miss Noord Holland’s famous Alkmaar cheese market and picture-perfect scenes up on the Schermer and Beemster polders.
Easy to Moderate: Gentle cycling tours in mainly flat terrain with some gentle hills, but no long or steep ascents. Individual stages of the cycle ride are generally short with some longer stages. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
