Cycle & Stay: Heritage Cities & so much more
8 days I Hotel to Hotel I Self-guided cycle tour
A fairytale town hall, the tallest windmill, a right royal residence and beautiful blue and white ceramics – every city has a story to tell and this charming cycle tour around Holland’s heartlands is simply full of them!
Pedal out in true Dutch style from Bunnik / Utrecht and your route along the River Vecht towards Amsterdam hints at the lavish lives of wealthy merchants who showed off with stately mansions and elegant summerhouses. The bustling capital itself is simply overflowing with history, so take to the centuries old canals for a real insight into the architecture and the full impact of the beautiful gabled houses. There’s a real shoppers’ paradise to be discovered, hiding behind Haarlem’s historic façades, whilst Holland’s famous bright bulbfields lurk just inland from the coast, safe behind the sandy stretches of protective dunes between the popular resorts of Zandvoort and Scheveningen. Visit them all and pedal past the seat of Government and royal quarters in The Hague.
Along the River Schie, you’ll want to find out what links beautiful Delft to the world famous 17th century Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. Perhaps go and see how Delft Blue ceramics are made here or discover everything about ‘Jenever’ and distilling gin in the old Dutch fishing village of Scheidam, home of the tallest traditional windmill in the world. There are superb views from the top of the Euromast in Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest port; a breath-taking row of 19 windmills on the famous Kinderdijk and a towering, fairytale town hall to discover when you get under the skin of the historic cheese market town, Gouda. Cycling back towards Utrecht, there are more polders and parks; rivers and lakes; stately homes and De Haar Castle all en route. And the big city is full of surprises too, from its wonderful wharves on the ‘Oude Gracht’ to its eclectic mix of museums.
Nice & Easy - Gentle touring by bike along flat cycle tracks and minor roads. Some small and short ascents only in areas where there are drainage dykes and bridges. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
