Cycle & Stay: Lake IJssel - Highlights Tour
8 days I Hotel to Hotel I Self-guided cycle tour
A circular cycle tour around Holland’s most amazing inland lake - the great IJsselmeer - simply has to be one of the most scenic experiences a-round! Just slightly shorter than the Lake Ijssel Grand Tour, enjoy superb cycling with refreshing views and wonderful Dutch discoveries, as you pedal full circle along the quiet roads and cycle ways of one of Europe’s most unique waterscapes, crossing the lake by ferry from Enkuizen to Stavoren (rather than continuing up to the Closure Dijk (Afsluitdijk) crossing-point at Den Oever).
From your start close to the capital, you’ll be taking in Dutch greats like Amsterdam, Edam and Hoorn as you explore the former Zuiderzee’s highlights - historic fishing and trading towns once on the coast, plus the locks, pumping stations, windmills and nature reserves of the reclaimed land. Enkhuizen offers a great lesson in Dutch history both at the Zuiderzee Museum and through its monuments dating from those rich 17th century trading days, but across the lake, Friesland’s provincial capital of Stavoren has its own time-honoured tales to tell.
After Noord-Holland’s lush polder landscapes, Gaasterland’s scenery is more rolling and wooded, its little lakes the result of generations of peat digging. Near Lemmer, the world’s largest steam-driven pumping station is a real eye-opener, but then so too are the delicate fenland flora and fauna just waiting to be discovered en route to Hansa town, Kampen, and the old fishing harbour of Harderwijk by the Randmeren lakes.
Easy to Moderate: Gentle cycling tours in mainly flat terrain with some gentle hills, but no long or steep ascents. Individual stages of the cycle ride are generally short with some longer stages. Cycle map includes route options, so you have the flexibility to shorten or extend your bike tour as you wish.
